Information about this assignment (#4: Case Study Poster and Presentation) will be posted on this wiki page after the fourth Wimba session scheduled on October 17, Wednesday.
Group Poster Session Presentations
You may choose to work in groups of 3-4. To facilitate the formation of groups, you need to choose individuals who are using similar learning theory as a lens in analyzing the data collected for the case study. If there are more than four students working on the same learning theory, then it is possible to have two groups.
Tentatively, the groups are listed below. Please email me by Friday, October 12 about the final members of group.
Radical Behaviorism (Beale-Norris, Bellamy, Cummins) 1 group
Motivation (Alderson, Hahn, Jacobson, Manns, North, Waters) OK for 2 groups (3/3)
Self-Regulation (Dulaney, Dunn, Neumann, Prescott, Rich, Robinson, Thompson) OK for 2 groups (3/4)
Cognitive Processing (Jones, Pollard, Robbins, Scoville) 1 group
Cognitive and Knowledge Development (Bush, Davis) 1 group
Bandura's Social Learning (Dixon, Keovongsak, Megbuluba, Offut, Sorrells) OK for 2 groups (2/3)
Schema Theory (Watkins) 1 group
NOTE: Please contact me via email as soon as possible if you cannot find a group by October 11, Thursday.
Instructions
First, each member of the group will prepare an electronic or virtual poster using PowerPoint. The poster will be about the case you have been observing and collecting data. The following information should be included in the poster –
1. The Problem of the Case
What is the problem? What type of problem is it? (Learning a specific content or skill, Classroom management, Socialization issues, etc.)
Why is the problem important? To whom?
How was the problem identified?
Was the process for identifying the problem effective?
What does the literature about managing or handling this type of problem?
2. Steps (if not, observed steps by the teacher) taken to address the problem (Provide as much detail as possible)
What is the proposed solution? What did the teacher do (if you are observing)?
What steps were taken to address the problem?
How long did it take to implement the solution?
How long did you observe? (Suggest between 1-2 weeks)
3. Results (from the steps taken by you or the teacher)
What happened after the solution was implemented?
How did those involved in this case respond?
What types of data did you collect?
4. Discussion of the Results in relation the Learning Theory
How did you analyze the data you collected?
What will your learning theorist say about this?
5. Challenges and how they were met (observed by you given the steps undertaken)
6. Beyond Results – Implications to effective teaching and student learning
7. Lessons that you learned from this experience
8. References (between 3-5 peer reviewed or refereed articles). Please don't include references from magazines, newspapers, books or websites.
You will share your poster to your group mates as well as submit it to your professor in the approprite CourseDen drop box for credit.
Second, for the electronic poster presentation, as group you need to create a group poster with the following information gathered from all posters of the group members ---
1. Similarities and differences among the group members on the case study participant (demographic characteristics), type of problem, process of identifying the problem, and significant findings from the literature.
2. Similarities and differences among group members on the steps taken to provide a solution to the case problem.
3. Similarities and differences among group members on the results.
4. Similarities and differences among group members on how the learning theory was used as lens to analyze the collected data
5. Similarities and differences among group members on the challenges experiences in developing the case study.
6. Similarities and differences among group members on the implications identified based on individual case studies
7. Similarities and differences among group members on the lessons learned from developing a case study.
Your group will present the electronic poster to the class in Wimba next month. There are several links to sites providing examples of electronic/virtual poster sessions, and other examples may be found by using a search engine to look for the terms “electronic poster session,” or “virtual poster session.”
Please include a bibliography of your sources, which will serve as a handout with the following conditions:
Between 20 - 25 references published after 2004 for groups with 4 members
Between 15 - 20 references published after 2004 for groups with 3 members
Between 10 - 15 references published after 2004 for groups with 2 members
Between 5 - 10 references published after 2004 for a group with 1 member.
Assessment of Student Performance
1. Electronic or virtual poster out of one slide of PowerPoint with dimensions equivalent to 36 inches (length) X 48 inches (width) in landscape orientation.
2. Handout containing a bibliography of sources (in Word). References from refereed or peer-reviewed journals. No citations from books, magazines, or websites will be accepted. References should be formatted using APA 6th edition.
3. Wimba Presentation – all group members should be present and be actively involved in presenting the poster material to the class.
4. Completion of Peer Review -- each student need to do a peer review of each group member.
